“No one can drive us crazy unless we give them the keys.” – Douglas Horton
That’s right. Who or what drives you crazy?
In our world today, there are a lot of crazy things going on all around us. Most of them are not in our control; the political situation, some aspects of old religions, world horrors, and just the mass of people.
Now there are, to be sure, bona fide crazy people. They have psychiatric diagnoses. And yes, some professionals are themselves not all that sane!
But by and large we know when we think someone is crazy. I’m not talking about the whack jobs out there. They are just temporarily not behaving in a rational manner. I’m talking about all of us that at one time or another have had crazy thoughts or behaved in a bizarre manner.
There are people who follow the rules and never are out of control. They are not the ‘fun’ people.
People who are in love are always a bit crazed. It is usually a temporary condition. Watch couples before they are married and used to one another and watch those married and see the difference.
Some really crazy people have been creative in a wonderful way. They have produced art, music, literature, and food to name a few. Some suffered as a result and many committed suicides but that aside, they were crazy and productive.
Most jobs won’t tolerate crazy. They need workers to follow the rules. But there have been a number of companies that have allowed and even encouraged employees to think outside the box and come up with new ideas to try. The risk is often a good one and pays off big time.
The fact of the matter is, reality sucks a good bit of the time.
Getting out of your brain and your own life experience and being wild can help make it tolerable and even pleasant.
Being an eccentric is interesting and not boring. It’s just this side of really crazy.
People who push it in an artificial manner are not what I am talking about. I’m talking about the real unusual but not the ones that are insane. That’s the legal term for true crazies.
Just acting out from time to time, looking different, or having a free-wheeling episode here and there can be exhilarating. It also makes this world tolerable and helps keep you happy.
The bad ones think bad thoughts and then act on them. How often do we hear the neighbors saying, He was such a nice quiet, polite boy. I can’t believe he murdered his girlfriend and then cut her in pieces.
Not so far-fetched. Listen to the news.
Some insanity runs in families and may be genetic. It always a good idea to get a family history before connecting with someone long term.
Barring that, being a unique individual is great. Being uninhibited at times is good for you.
Just thinking crazy thoughts off and on, won’t hurt you, or others.
Sharing those thoughts with someone can be tricky. Will they understand? Will they run away? Will they then share their crazy thoughts with you?
It can be a fun exercise.
None of us runs on radar. We have to talk and talk plainly. And maybe say the same things over and over to be understood. A test I give couples about communication is to look each other in the eye and say something important and meaningful about yourself. Then ask the partner to repeat what was said and then say what they believe their partner was really saying to them. I am always amazed at the misinterpretations I hear.
Just because you think something and even after telling it you cannot be sure you are understood.
Schizophrenics have an uncanny ability usually to know what people are about. They have no filter and get to the core of the person they are in contact with. It is quite fascinating.
Most of us, however, get by with our own brand of crazy thoughts or actions and for the most part survive well. We like to remember them or have others remind us of them. It usually comes with laughter.
“Here’s all you have to know about men and women: women are crazy, and men are stupid. And the main reason women are crazy is that men are stupid.” – George Carlin
Have you ever had or done something crazy? Would you do it again? Do you know anyone that you believe is really crazy?
